Overlaying Text
Adding text to your video images is easy. Text overlay allows you to
say anything you want and you can have all the text overlays you need.
At the top of the image above you see the words Beach Cam.
The words are a normal large font with a dropped shadow. On the bottom
of the image, you see the words Fun in the sun. These
words have a background fill and a translucent effect. Finally, the text
in the center excitedly declaring Surfs Up! is a large
font, rotated 30 degrees, and is also translucent. I will now cover the
steps needed to create the image above. (In case your wondering, the surf
really wasn't great that day, but as always, fun for the kids!)
|
First let's insert the Beach Cam Text.
Click the insert text button. A small text icon will appear
beside the mouse cursor to indicate that it is ready to insert
text.
|
|
Click the area on the image where you would like the text to
appear. Size and position the window correctly by left clicking
and draging the borders to resize. Click and drag the center of
the image to move it.
A blue border appears
around the text area when no text is entered. This border only
shows up in the editor and not in the final published image. If
not for this blue border, the text area would be invisible when
no text was entered.
|

The text properties dialog will appear if it is not already displayed.
You can enter the text by clicking in the box marked Text
or simply start typing. Enter the text Beach Cam You can
also adjust the text font, size and color here. Set these values to
whatever you like. The box marked shadow positions the
dropped shadow that appears behind the text. A positive value makes the
shadow appear to the lower right of the image. A negative value makes the
shadow appear to the upper left of the image. A value of zero
turns the shadow off. The button marked Charmap will open
the Character Map Dialog box. This dialog box let's you select special
characters that do not appear on your keyboard, such as the copyright symbol.
Use the Character Map dialog box to copy the characters to the clipboard,
then insert them into the text box.
You do not have to open the text properties
dialog box to enter text. You can simply select it and start typing.
|
You should now have something like the image to the left.
(Your webcam image may very). Clicking outside the selction
will remove the selection box.
|
•
Now for Fun in the sun.
|
Again, click the insert text button.
|
|
Click the area on the image where you would like the text.
Then size and position the window correctly. Go ahead and
enter Fun in the sun as the text. Change
the font to something interesting.
|

Click on the Background tab in the properties dialog box.
The background color should already be black. Check the box marked
Background. Then set the translucency value to
80%.

Your screen should now look something like the image above.
•
Finally, let's enter the text Surfs Up!.
|
You know the drill. Click the insert text button.
|
|
Click the area on the image where you would like the text.
Then size and position the window correctly. Go ahead and
enter Surfs Up! as the text. Very the font
if you like.
|

Click on the Text tab in the properties dialog box.
Adjust the Rotation angle to 300 or 30 degrees. The
rotation angle is in tenths of a degree.

Click on the Background tab in the properties dialog box.
Adjust the translucency to 60%.
|
Text is clipped against the rectangle when translucency is
enabled. So adjust the rectangle until all the text is visible.
|
|
That's better. And that's all.
|
I think you have the hang of inserting text now. So go nuts!
